This project proposes to make the cellar spaces at a famous downtown Manhattan office building viable for commercial retail use while relating the plaza to the surrounding district and offering public amenities on the southern face of the plaza. The skyscraper represents one of Gordon Bunshaft’s most renowned buildings and creates a striking dialogue with Isamu Noguchi’s iconic Red Cube. The design response must respect, and enhance the existing.
